Simplex SC3 Airspace System

Designed with ocean welfare in mind

High performance that doesn’t compromise nature

The best performing lubricant of a propeller shaft bearing is oil. To combine this performance with environmental friendly aspects, one solution is to make it impossible that sterntube oil leaks into the seawater.

The Simplex SC3 Airspace system is specifically designed to this requirement.

  • 4-ring seal system with a dedicated air chamber ensuring the perfect separation of seawater and stern tube lube oil
  • The Airspace seal allows to operate the stern tube with mineral oil in compliance with the VGP2013 regulations. It is considered a non oil-to-sea interface
  • Excellent long-term performance, high operational reliability and completely pollution free

Optional dirt and net protection ring

  • Effective aft seal protection against dirt, fishing nets and lines
  • Fitted in front of the first sealing ring facing seawater
  • Split design

SKF Stern Tube Solutions

Versatility to suit every yacht

Made to meet the demands of every yacht propeller shaft

To save the oceans is one of the main challenges in the future of yachting. Today the environmentally friendly operation of a yacht can be supported by the use of:

  • an oil lubricated sterntube combined with a non polluting air seal systems or
  • a water lubricated sterntube

SKF Marine offers several stern tube systems to meet the demands of all yacht propeller shaft applications:

1. Conventional closed stern tube systems

  • oil-lubricated on mineral oil base
  • oil-lubricated on biodegradable oil base (EAL)
  • mineral oil-lubricated with a special non-polluting Airspace aft seal (VGP 2013 compliant
  • fresh water-lubricated instead of oil in the sterntube

2. Sea water-lubricated open stern tube systems with continuous water flushing

3. Combinations of closed fresh water/oil-lubricated stern tubes and open sea water-lubricated propeller shaft bearings (one or two struts solutions)

Sterntube seals

Seal out contaminants. Seal in lubricity.

A state-of-the-art solution that keeps sterntubes shipshape

Water lubrication is by far the most environmentally friendly solution for lubricating propeller shaft bearings and is thus compliant with current legislation such as the VGP 2013 (Vessel General Permit) regulations. The modular design of the water-lubricated sealing system allows servicing work to be carried out very quickly and safely.

Depending on the specific application and our customers requirements, the following Simplex seals can be combined with the Simplex BlueRun sterntube solutions providing a complete package.

Simplan FWD Seal

Mechanical face type seal for water-lubricated stern tubes:

  • Silicon carbide sealing ring material: wear-resistant
  • Additional emergency seal –Pneumostop- which is inflatable at standstill
  • No shaft wear

Simplex SC3 FWD Seal

Simplex lip type seal for water-lubricated stern tubes

  • 2-ring sealing system for water-lubricated stern tubes
  • Additional emergency seal –Pneumostop- which is inflatable at standstill
  • Available as a split and non-split version

Simplex oil-lubricated sterntube seals are designed for oil-lubricated propeller shaft bearings and have two key purposes – firstly to prevent the leakage of oil into the engine room or water, and secondly to keep water out of the sterntube. These seals comply with industry classification requirements and are type-approved by all major classification societies. As such, they are designed to last for years to come and withstand the following conditions:

  • Vibrations
  • High water pressures and high circumferential speeds
  • Radial and axial shaft displacements
  • Operating times of 6,000 hours and more per year

Simplex SC3 FWD Oil-Lubricated Seal

Simplex lip type seal for stern tubes

  • 2-ring seal for standard application
  • Combinable with each aft seal

SKF Cooper Split flange bearing

Dependability that delivers

Reduces machinery maintenance for peace of mind onboard

  • Uses cylindrical rollers and components made in halves
  • Assembly of halves around the shaft eliminates removal of couplings, gearboxes, pulleys etc, and simplifies shaft design
  • Housed in Cooper swivel cartridges offering shaft alignment and superior concentric sealing options, they can be used in various forms of outer housings

Centrax bulkhead seal

Where rotating shaft meets fixed bulkhead

Stay flood-free with this self-lubricating solution

The Centrax bulkhead seal is used exclusively to seal rotating shafts at bulkheads to avoid the flooding of related compartments

  • Radial and axial movements of the shaft are easily tolerated by the Centrax seal
  • Due to the good self-lubricating properties of the sealing rings, no additional lubrication is required
  • Fully split design, insitu installation and maintenance without shaft removal
  • An optional (split) adapter flange is available to allow the recess, the pitch circle and the outer diameters to be adapted to match the required dimensions.
